>> | Three sisters from Detroit formed together the group 'The Jones Girls' in the early 70's. The sisters are Shirley, Brenda and Valerie Jones. They released their debut single 'Will you be there' in 1974 for the Paramount Label. In mid seventies they toured with several artists like B.B. King, The Four Tops, The Impressions. Kenny Gamble of Philadelphia International records (PIR) signed them for his label after attending a 'Diana Ross' tour accompanied by 'The Jones Girls'. Producer artist Maurice Starr, the man who discovered the New Edition back in 1981, released his album 'Fllaming Starr' in 1980 on RCA records. This album or a track from it never reached any Billboard chart. On the original album their are eight tracks recorded, mostly Funk tracks. Check 'Moving On Up', 'Dance To The Funky Groove' This masterpiece consist also some great soul tracks. Don't forget the great boogie tune 'I Wanna Dance With You'. >> | Evan Rogers is a former member of the formation Dayton. He can be heard leading several tunes on the album 'Hot Fun' from 1982. In 1983 he debuted with the single 'Secret Love'which he co-wrote with Carl Sturken. His follow up was 'Stay Here With Me'. Both songs didn't appear on his debut album. Funky Town Grooves added both as bonus on this reissue. Both Rogers and Sturken formed a producer team for several other artists like Evelyn King. This album is a mix of pop and R&B tunes. Check ' Full-time lover' with the vocals of earlier mentioned Evelyn Ling. Other great vocalist on this album are Siedah Garrett, Audrey Wheeler, Cindy Mizelle and Jimi Tunnell. > |

It was at one of the gigs that they came to the attention of Kashif. Later two members Roy (drums) and Joe (keyboards) toured with kashif. Kashif enlisted bassist Wayne Braithwaite and guitarist Ira Siegel as producer for this album. Other great names are: Kenny G, LaLa, Najee, Steve Horton and B.J. Nelson. Funky Town Grooves does it again. FTG reissued one of the best albums of George Duke. This album entitled 'Dream On' is from 1982 and originally released on Epic Records. The original vinyl version contains 10 tracks. The FTG release has as Bonus Track 'Shine On'. This album did it reasonable on the Billboard album chart, it reached number 17. Two tracks, 'Shine On' (#15) and 'Ride On Love' (#83), from this album reached the Billboard singles chart. Check the album page of 'Dream On' for some samples. > |

>> | Another great reissue from Funkytowngrooves.com. Michael Henderson's album from 1981 Slingshot (#14 Billboard r&b chart). Original on Buddah Records. This album has two funk tunes like the title track 'slingshot', 'Geek You up' #51 Billboard r&b singles. A great boogie track is 'In It For The Goodies' with fantastic vocals of Henderson and Venna Keith. The rest of the tracks are slow tempo soul tunes . For example 'Never Gonna Give You Up' produced by Chuck Jackson. Gene Page did the string arrangements, thus this means that this is a Quality Tune. And of course the outstanding vocals of Phyllis Hyman on 'Can't we fall in love again'. This track reached number 9 on the R&B Single chart in the US. > |
