Jeffrey Osborne has released a new album
 | Former Member of L.T.D. Jeffrey Osborne has released a new album From The Soul with a collection of cover songs that is already getting noticed on the Urban AC charts. He has reinterpreted classic tunes in his own, silky-smooth style, from Aretha Franklin's "Till You Come Back To Me," to the Curtis Mayfield standard, "People Get Ready," to Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Also included are his first chart hit from the album, "Yes, I'm Ready," and the much-covered "Hey Girl." Overall, this compilation stands very well alongside the recent releases from Michael McDonald and Hall & Oates, and should be welcomed into the collection of any classic R&B fan. |
Eugene Record of th Chi-Lites Died
| Eugene Record of The Chi-Lites died on 22th of July. Eugene, a member of the Chi-Lites, was responisble for a lot of Chi-Lites hits like 'Oh Girl', 'Have You Seen Her'. Eugene Record also recorded two solo albums in the late seventies. The number 'Fan the Fire' is one of my favorites. After his solo career he returned to the Chi-Lites for recording more albums. Eugene died from cancer. He was 64. |

The Luther Vandross Memorial Special in de SoulShow
Aankomende zaterdag 9 juli is er een Luther Vandross special in de Soulshow op Radio Veronica. Ferry Maat laat je tussen 18:00 en 20:00 uur nummers horen uit het hele oeuvre van deze karakteristieke soulzanger/ songwriter/ producer die vorige week vrijdag op 54 jarige leeftijd overleed.
De in New York City geboren Luther Ronzoni Vandross verkocht wereldwijd meer dan 30 miljoen platen, won maar liefst 8 Grammy Awards en kreeg talloze onderscheidingen zoals de Soul Train- en American Music Award. Zijn carrière startte in 1972 toen hij een liedje schreef voor de Broadway musical The Wizzard of Oz; dat was het nummer Everybody Rejoice later omgedoopt tot A Brandnew Day en natuurlijk beroemd geworden in de uitvoering van onder anderen Diana Ross en Michael Jackson. Zijn doorbraak als zanger beleefde hij vreemd genoeg in het achtergrondkoortje van David Bowie. Al snel werd hij een veelgevraagd achtergrondzanger en arrangeur en werkte hij voor toppers als Bette Midler en Barbra Streisand. Luther verdiende verder zijn geld met het zingen van commercials en hij was één van de meest gevraagde jinglezangers van die tijd. Zijn debuut solo-album Never Too Much bereikte in 1981 onmiddellijk de top van de R&B charts en verkocht meer dan één miljoen exemplaren. Luther schreef en produceerde platen voor talloze artiesten waaronder zijn drie grootste jeugdidolen: Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick en Aretha Franklin. Met Aretha maakte hij zelfs twee albums.
Ferry Maat is met zijn radioprogramma 'Soulshow' iedere zaterdag van 18:00 - 20.00 te beluisteren bij Radio Veronica. Radio Veronica is met de beste 80's & 90's hits in heel Nederland via de ether en kabel te ontvangen.
Radio Veronica is onderdeel van de Sky Radio Group.

Luther Vandross Died on the 1st of July
| Luther Vandross, the American soulsinger died on the 1st of july at age 54. Robert Cavanaugh, the hospital spokesman said 'Luther had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team'. His healthiness was not so good after his stroke in april 2003. Luther sold more than 25 milion copies worldwide. Funeral services will be held at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, located at 1076 Madison Avenue (at 81st Street) New York, New York on Wednesday and Thursday, July 6 and 7 with public viewings from 4:00pm - 9:00pm. The Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 8 at Riverside Church, located at 490 Riverside Drive, New York, New York scheduled for 12:00pm. This has been a terrible year for losing one of the greatest soul singers. Luther Vandross, RIP |

Black Music Database --> Soul & Funk Music Database
The Ultimate Black Music Database is now online for one year. I started
this database with 1100 artists, 2500 albums, and 7000 tracks. This
amount is more than doubled. The amount of covers, samples is also
increased and the updates will be still on regular basis. I just
recently introduced the members/appear on list.
It was a year with ups and downs. The downs with the deadth of our favorit artists, Ernesto McKenzie Phillips (starpoint), John Whitehead, Ray Charles, Syreeta, Rick James, Tyrone Davis, and Rennee Diggs.
The ups with the new albums of 70s/80s artists like The O' Jays, {safm}Brenda Russell{/safm}, Teena Marie, Michael Cooper, Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker, Will Downing, Al green. And a Soul & Funk music stream for this site.
For me it is exactly the right moment to change the layout for this site. From now on it will be called The Ultimate Soul And Funk Music Database. Many Thanx to Remco for spending hours behind his favorit PS app. The URL is also changed to https://www.soulandfunkmusic.com. The old URL will be still available.

Renee Diggs (Lead Singer Starpoint) Died at age 50
Renee Diggs-Phillips, former lead singer of the group Starpoint, died at age of 50. She died on 18th march due to complications with her disease Multiple Sclerosis.
Renee met Ernesto Phillips (who died Thursday, April 1, 2004) and his brothers in the early stages of their musical careers. Starpoint were signed to the Polygram imprint, Casablanca / Chocolate City Records in 1980. On that label they recorded four albums.
During the 'Restless' tour, in 1985, Renee was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After this diagnoses Renee recorded three more outings with Starpoint under bad health conditions. After five years, in 1990, Renee decided to go solo. The U.K. based record company Expansion acquired the rights to the subsequent 1994 recording and released 'Oasis' in late 2000. Renee formed the Renee Diggs Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis.
Thanx Renee for your outstanding vocal contributions. It always gives me the creeps.
