Bio

Rufus was an American funk and soul music group that was formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1969. The group was formed by Kevin Murphy and Al Ciner, who had previously played together in the band The American Breed. Rufus went through several lineup changes in their early years, but eventually settled on a lineup that included Murphy on keyboards and vocals, Ciner on guitar, Andre Fischer on drums, Bobby Watson on bass, and Chaka Khan on vocals.

The group's self-titled debut album was released in 1973 and featured the hit single "Whoever's Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)." The album was a commercial and critical success, and established Rufus as a major force in the funk and soul music scene.

Over the years, Rufus released a number of successful albums and hit singles, including "Rufusized" (1974), "Rags to Rufus" (1974), "Ask Rufus" (1977), and "Masterjam" (1979). The group's music was characterized by its combination of funk, soul, and rock influences, and Chaka Khan's powerful and soulful vocals.

In addition to their success as a recording group, Rufus was also known for their electrifying live performances. The group's concerts were renowned for their energy and musicianship, and they became one of the most sought-after live acts of the 1970s.

Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, Rufus continued to record and perform throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1983, Chaka Khan left the group to pursue a successful solo career, but the remaining members of Rufus continued to record and perform with different vocalists.

Today, Rufus is remembered as one of the most innovative and influential funk and soul music groups of the 1970s. With their infectious grooves, dynamic vocals, and tight musicianship, they paved the way for future generations of R&B and funk musicians. And with Chaka Khan's stunning voice and charismatic stage presence, they left an indelible mark on the music industry that continues to be felt today.
