Patti LaBelle is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman who was born on May 24, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She began her career in the early 1960s as the lead singer of the group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. After the group disbanded in 1976, LaBelle embarked on a successful solo career, which spanned more than five decades.

LaBelle was born Patricia Louise Holte to Henry and Bertha Holte. She grew up in a musical family and sang in her church choir from a young age. LaBelle attended John Bartram High School in Philadelphia, where she formed the group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles with fellow classmates Cindy Birdsong, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendryx.

In 1962, the group signed with Newtown Records and released their debut single "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," which became a hit. Over the next few years, they released several more singles, including "Down the Aisle (The Wedding Song)" and "You'll Never Walk Alone," which earned them a loyal fan base.

In 1967, the group changed their name to LaBelle and released their debut album, "LaBelle," which included the hit single "Lady Marmalade." The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a cultural phenomenon, earning LaBelle their first gold record.

After the group disbanded in 1976, LaBelle embarked on a successful solo career. She released her debut solo album, "Patti LaBelle," in 1977, which included the hit singles "Joy to Have Your Love" and "Dan Swit Me." Over the next few years, she released several more albums, including "Tasty," which featured the hit single "New Attitude."

LaBelle's career continued to flourish in the 1990s and 2000s. She released several more albums, including "Burnin'," "Gems," and "Classic Moments," and earned several Grammy nominations. In addition to her music career, LaBelle also acted in several films and TV shows, including "A Soldier's Story," "Out All Night," and "American Horror Story: Freak Show."

LaBelle has also been involved in several business ventures over the years. In 2005, she launched her own line of food products, "Patti LaBelle's Lite Cuisine," which includes a variety of low-fat and low-calorie products. She also authored several cookbooks, including "Recipes for the Good Life" and "Desserts LaBelle."

Throughout her career, LaBelle has been recognized for her contributions to music and the arts. She has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has also received several honorary degrees from universities and colleges across the country.
