Just reissued on CD by PTG records from, in The Netherlands based, Vinyl-Masterpiece the superb album by Peabo Bryson ‘Don’t Play With Fire’. This is Peabo’s eight album and was originally released in the fall of 1982 on Capitol records in th
e US. This masterpiece is written and produced by mister ‘Ballad’ Bryson himself.
It starts with the fantastic midtempo ‘Go For It’, great hooks, drum patterns and bass play. ‘Give Me Your Love’ is the slow jam under the slow jams. This tune reached #22 in the Billboard R&B single chart. Another favorite tune is the title track ‘Don’t play With Fire’ is a mid tempo with a great bass line and synth sounds, and on background vocals Brenda Jones of The Jones Girls. What a voices! Another slow tempo single that reached the Billboard chart is ‘We Don’t Have To Talk’, it reached #16.
The ballad Remember When (so much love)’ is the opening track on the B Side, this track reached #54 in the Billboard R&B single chart in March of 1983. ‘Turn It On’ is a mid tempo tune in the trend of ‘Go For It’, great bass licks and vocal hooks. A favorite tune. Track #3 ‘Words’ opens acapella for a one-a-half minute, till the bass, and drums drops in and suddenly it is a favorite tune;-). I almost skipped this track, you’re warned. This album closes with the ballad ‘Let Me Be The One You Need’.
For me this is one of the best albums Peabo released during his long lasting career.
