Bio



Gary Bartz is an American jazz saxophonist and composer who was born on September 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in a musical family and started playing the alto saxophone at the age of eleven. He went on to study music at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

In the 1960s, Bartz became a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and later played with Miles Davis during his electric period. He was also a member of the Max Roach Quartet, and worked with a variety of other jazz legends, including McCoy Tyner, Jackie McLean, and Charles Mingus.

Bartz's solo career began in the early 1970s, with the release of his album "Another Earth" in 1971. He went on to release a number of successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "Music Is My Sanctuary" (1977) and "Bartz" (1980). His music was characterized by its fusion of jazz, funk, and soul, and his virtuosic saxophone playing.

In addition to his success as a recording artist, Bartz has also been a respected jazz educator. He has taught at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the New England Conservatory of Music.

Today, Bartz is recognized as one of the most talented and respected jazz saxophonists of his generation. With his innovative style and dedication to pushing the boundaries of jazz, he has inspired and influenced countless musicians over the years.
