"Robbery" Was Teena Marie's First Project After Leaving Motown Records And Signing With Epic. The Results Are Amazing And Eventhough The Album Was Considered A Commercial Failure At The Time, In Time It's Become A Fan Favorite. This Has Been Due To Word-of-mouth, Radio's "Quiet Storm" Format And Teena Marie's Brilliant Singing, Writing And Production Skills. Not Many Women, And Especially R&b Artists Were Given Full Production Reign Over Their Work, Which Makes This Effort By Marie Even More Of A Triumph. "Robbery" Has The Funk/synth Dance Tracks, "Fix It" And "Midnight Magnet", But Marie Doesn't Go Overboard With The Synthesizers. "Playboy" With It's Background Chants ("YYes"-"SShake") Uses An "actual" Horn Section (in The Late 80's Ya'll) To Great Effect And Marie Brings It Home With A Sexy, Explosive Vocal Performance. This Is Teena Marie, So We All Know It's The Amazing Ballads That Have Taken This Album/cd To "classic" Status. "Shadow Boxing" Has A Dreamy, Ethereal Quality To It, With A Vocal By Marie That Bubbles Over With Passion. "Dear Lover" Is One Of Those Slow Jams That Is Able To Convey A Feeling When You Just Can't Find The Right Expression Of Words. Marie Gives It An Immediacy In Her Delivery Of The Vocal And It's A Track That Resonates With Many Of Her Female Fans. "Stop The World" Has An Airy, Brazilian Feel To It That Belies It's Message Of Despair And Desperation. Marie Saves The Best Ballad For Last. "Cassanova Brown" Is A Tour-de-force Vocal Performance And For All Of Those Who Thought It Couldn't Get Any Better That "Portugese Love" Were Pleasantly Surprised. Marie Pleads, Begs, Chastises, And Contemplates All Of The Intricacies Of A Relationship Doomed That's Doomed From The Start. She Does This With A (jazz Inflected)voice That Soars, Swoops And Sustains (notes That Is) To Glorious Results. "Cassanova Brown" Is One Of Teena Marie's Best Vocal Performances To Date And The Song Is A Fan Favorite And Concert Staple. There Comes A Time When Some Really Great Records For Some Odd Reason Fall Through The Cracks. "Robbery" Was One Such Record And For That Reason Deserves To Have A Second Look. A Must Have Record For Any R&b Fan And Most Definately Essential Listening For Fans Of Teena Marie's Music.
