Roses Are Red Went To Number One On The R&b Billboard Chart For 1 Week In July 1988. This Is The Story Behind That Song:L.a. Reid And {l}babyface{/l} Took A Simple Rhyme Known By Every School Child And Turned It Into A Number One Hit For Charles Derrick Kelvin And Ray Mccampbell —four Brothers From Flint Michigan Who Moved To Dallas And Formed The {l}mac Band{/l} ."roses Are Red" Wasn't Written For The Mccampbell Brothers Originally. {l}babyface{/l} Gave {p}the Whispers{/p} The Choice Of Having 'rock Steady' Or 'roses Are Red,'". {p}the Whispers{/p} Made The Decision. It Was A Budget Decision Because They Wanted To Take Just One Of The Records. They Passed On 'roses Are Red'...so That's How The {l}mac Band{/l} Got The Record. How Did L.a. And {l}babyface{/l} Get The Idea To Do A I Song Called "roses Are Red"? {l}babyface{/l} Wanted Something Simple. Is Was One Of {l}babyface{/l} 's Favorite Hooks That He He Had Writtenwithout No Real Deep Story About It.Charles Mccampbell Received A Demo Tape From {l}babyface{/l} With "roses Are Red" On It And Listened To It With His Brothers. The Lyrics Were Good And The Beat Was Real Solid. The Groove Of The Song Was Catchy And They Knew The Hook Was One That Would Last For A Long Long Time. They Could Hear Themselves Doing It And Making It The {l}mac Band{/l} Soundcause They Do A Lot Of Harmonies And {l}babyface{/l} Is Into Good Harmonies. So They Came To The Conclusion Immediately That It Was A Strong Song. L.a. And {l}babyface{/l} Cut The Track In Los Angeles And Then Brought The Brothers To Sunset-bernet Sound Studios In Dallas To Record The Vocals . During Recording Everything Went Smoothly It Was As If They Had Worked Together For Year Seven Though They Had Just Met. The Mccampell Brothers Worked Really Hard On Making Sure The Song Was Nailed Before They Even Got To Town. When The Mccampell Brothers Got To The Studio {l}babyface{/l} Knew It As Well As They I And That Was A Big Plus. The Mccampell Brothers Were Able To Go In And Knock Down The Parts And Do All The Harmonies. L.a. And {l}babyface{/l} Were Exciting And Fun To Work With — They Spent A Lot Of Time Laughing And Having A Good Time Because The Session Was Going So Well." {l}babyface{/l} : "they Could Really Singand They Harmonized Really Well. It Wasn't Always Easy...getting All The Peoplein A Groupto Blend Used To Take A Long Time But With The Mccambell Brothers Went In There And Did It In No Time.Charles Mccambell Believes One Of The Band's Strong Points Is The Brothers' Ability To Stay Focused: "and Being Brotherswe Have The Ability To Blend Naturally Without Putting Forth A Whole Lot Of Effort. We Have The Same Kind Of Vocal Chordsi Guess You Might Say. I Think Each Person Has Been Established To Sing His Own Part. I Do The Top Note In Most Situations. Kelvin Knows To Get The Bottom Note And Ray Knows How To Get The Middle Note. So We Go After It Each Time We Do A Songeach Of Us Singingthe Note That We Normally Do."L.a. Reid And {l}babyface{/l} Wrote And Produced Just Three Of The Nine Songs On The Brothers' Debut Album. Derrick Handled Lead Vocal Duties On "roses Are Red," Backed By His Three Brothers And {l}babyface{/l} . L.a. Played Drums And {l}babyface{/l} Played Keyboards .
