Funk's most recognizable bassist Bootsy Collins unveils plans for the world's first Funk University where he will serve as Professor Los Angeles, CA -- It began with a simple message on Bootsy Collins' twitter page to his more than 400,000 followers, which simply read "If You Build It, They Will Funk." Fans had no idea he was referring to the upcoming debut of Bootsy's Funk University, an online bass school for players around the planet to study under his direction. Bootsy’s Funk University begins its first semester on July 1, 2010 with enrollment based on a first come, first serve basis. Currently, interested players are encouraged to sign-up for exclusive information at www.thefunkuniversity.com. Registration for enrollment is set to begin in April for the summer launch. |
 | In 2006, D2G Records contemporary gospel and inspirational vocalist Niyoki (pronounced Nie-yo-kee), came on the gospel scene with her debut release, MY EVERYTHING. The project independently sold more than 15,000 copies, and spawned the hit single “He’s Here” (which ultimately reached the #8 position on Billboard’s Gospel chart and was named the 27th most-played gospel song of 2007 by the trade publication R&R (Radio and Records). Now she is back with her sophomore CD entitled REST which hit stores on August 19th via partnership with Executive Music Group and distribution by Fontana. Niyoki was previously one of Prince’s backup singers. |

It’s The Fonk Record featuring 11 original songs, Tisdale’s own funky vocals and a crew of down-and-dirty musicians, The Fonk Record also boasts three guest stars with extensive funk résumés—George Clinton, George Duke and Ali Ollie Woodson. To those who knew him best, it seemed only natural that Tisdale would craft a funk project. “He always wanted to make funk music,” says Derek (DOA) Allen, who produced The Fonk Record and was one of Tisdale’s closest friends. “People are going to see a whole ‘nother side of Wayman on this record—he was on a mission to play as hard and funky as he could.” |

Robert Wilson, a member of R&B/funk group the Gap Band, died at the age of 53 on Sunday (Aug. 15). Wilson, known as the "Godfather of Bass Guitar," suffered a heart attack in his Palmdale, Ca. home.
Wilson formed the Gap Band with brothers Charlie and Ronnie in the early 1970s, and the Tulsa group expanded upon the funk sound of George Clinton and Earth, Wind & Fire. The band's hits include "You Dropped a Bomb On Me," "Party Train" and "Early in the Morning." "My brother Robert was a bad boy on the bass," Charlie Wilson said of his brother in a statement. "We shared a bond as brothers, musicians and friends. I loved him and losing him is difficult for both Ronnie and I. The music world has lost a very talented man." Wilson, who was scheduled to perform at Tulsa's Timeless Music Festival on Aug. 28, is survived by his wife Brenda and two daughters, Robin and Latina Wilson. Source Billboard.com |

Soul music lost a great legend on January 5th. Willie Mitchell was responsible for the music of Al Green and the entire sound of Memphis based record label Hi-Records. Poppa Willie passed away at age 81 and leaves a tremendous catalog of classics behind. Dutch music collector Djef, who manages the Originals section at online jukebox 22tracks, selected 22 gems as an ode to him and his legacy. |
| Mitchell produced sparkling jewels like Al Green's Let's Stay Together and diamonds in the rough such as Could I Be Falling In Love by the more obscure Syl Johnson. Rather than having a hard time keeping up with the pace of music, the distinguished sound he once wrote the blueprint for remains timeless. Do You Feel Me by Anthony Hamilton, produced by The Bomb Squad's Hank Shocklee and arranged by Willie Mitchell is a perfect example of how the sound of Hi-Records is still very much sought-after in today's music. | |
